How to Conduct a Field Test for Your Dissertation
Ready to conduct a field test for your dissertation? A field test is your study’s dress rehearsal. Not a “mini dissertation,” not a full hypothesis test, and not a way to pad your sample size. The purpose is simpler and more practical: confirm that your design works in the real world.
Done well, a field test answers questions like:
- Can you recruit the participants you claim you can recruit?
- Do people understand your consent materials and directions?
- Do your instruments behave the way you expect (timing, clarity, missing data)?
- Can you collect the data cleanly and securely?
- Can you execute your procedures consistently across participants, sites, and days?
Field test versus pilot study versus “try it on a friend”
Different programs use different labels. The safest distinction to use in dissertation language is:
- Field test: tests your procedures in the real setting (site logistics, scheduling, privacy constraints, human behavior in context).
- Pilot study: often broader; may include preliminary analysis to estimate effect sizes, reliability, or feasibility.
- Informal pretest: helpful for early instrument clarity (one-on-one feedback), but it is not a substitute for field conditions.
When in doubt, call it a field test of feasibility and procedures, and keep the scope tight.
Step 1: Lock the field test purpose (write it as a short paragraph)
Your committee will trust your field test more when you state what it is not trying to do.
A clean purpose statement usually includes:
- What you are testing (procedures, instruments, recruitment, tech, timing)
- What “success” looks like (feasibility benchmarks)
- What you will change after the test (revision targets)
